This is a review of “Shakespeare’s Champion” by Charlaine Harris. It is the 2nd book in The Lily Bard Series. It follows on from “Shakespeare’s Landlord“.
Racial violence is rife in Shakespeare, Arkansas. After interceding in a fight where a black man was jumped by white teens, she hears that he has been beaten to death just weeks later. Soon after, a bodybuilder is found dead at her gym. It appears that there is a white supremacist group in town, and they are getting more violent than ever.
Lily once again uses the dirt she uncovers in her cleaning job to unravel this mystery. She shows us that women can be strong and can kick butt too.
Full of insight into racism of the South and violence against women, this book is deep and meaningful, as well as flippant and suspenseful. With a couple of love/sex scenes thrown in, it’s far from a boring read.
